Itron and Snowflake integrate grid intelligence with the AI Data Cloud to optimize utility infrastructure and support clean energy growth
5 May 2026

The modern electrical grid was designed for a one-way flow of power, a predictable journey from coal plant to kitchen toaster. Today, that journey is cluttered by solar panels, electric vehicles, and the erratic whims of a decarbonising world. To manage this mess, Itron and Snowflake have announced a partnership to merge grid-level data with cloud analytics. It is an attempt to solve a physical problem with digital tools.
For decades, power companies have operated on fragmented systems. Data lived in silos, often arriving too late to be of much use. By integrating Itron’s smart endpoints with Snowflake’s AI Data Cloud, the companies aim to provide a unified view of the network. The goal is to move from reactive repairs to proactive planning. In theory, an engineer should be able to simulate the stress of a thousand new car chargers on a single suburban street before the first one is even plugged in.
The stakes are higher than mere convenience. As the world shifts toward renewable energy, the grid faces unprecedented volatility. Weather-dependent power sources and high-drain appliances create spikes that can fry aging infrastructure. Precise data allows utilities to direct capital more effectively, ensuring that investments are made in the right transformers rather than the most vocal neighbourhoods.
However, the transition is not without its trade-offs. Moving critical infrastructure data to the cloud introduces new layers of technical complexity and reliance on third-party providers. Success depends on whether these digital ecosystems can scale as quickly as the climate goals they are meant to support. For now, the industry seems to be betting that the best way to keep the lights on is to ensure the data stays flowing. Keeping the grid resilient is no longer just a matter of copper and steel; it is increasingly a matter of bits and bytes.
